Area D – The Glade on One Tree Hill

Oak trees felled next to the Nature Reserve and memorials vandalised. 17 July 2020

Mature, healthy 60 foot Poplar tree cut down for access road to burial plots.

The Glade after dozens of trees cut down. Trees chopped into logs as requested by One Tree Hill Nature Reserve. Devastation for only 124 burial plots. Madness. Southwark Council is scarring a beautiful glade on One Tree Hill in Camberwell New Cemetery, just over the fence from the Nature Reserve. They have cut down dozens of trees, including 10 English Oaks, removed the memorials of poor WW2 casualties, and is building roadways over their graves.

The Glade before Southwark took it for new burial plots:

D1 – BURIAL AREAS

Southwark has cleared dozens of memorials to allow access roads over the graves. Photos left and right – see the area before and after Southwark vandalised the graves. Where are the memorials? And what are they going to do with them?

Read one family’s story:

‘I WENT TO SCATTER MY MUM’S ASHES AT MY GRANDPARENTS’ GRAVE BUT IT WAS MISSING’

“We were just flabbergasted,” said the father of three. “The whole lot of the section where their grave was had been completely decimated. They had just put everyone’s personal effects – fencing, teddy bears and flowers – into a big pile and everyone’s gravestones were missing and we didn’t know what was going on.”

And another family’s story:

“London Councils Are Selling Private Burial Plots On Paupers’ Graves”

“The council want us to think that they’re doing the right thing for the community, but the reality is they want to make more money by selling to people out of the borough for more. I’m not saying that every plot means something to someone, but some of those graves mean a lot to some people.”

PROJECT PLANS

Look at the two photos in Southwark’s notice – as if no trees were cut down and no roadways scarring One Tree Hill.

WHAT’S COMING – SOUTHWARK’S NCP-CAR PARK STYLE BURIAL PLOTS

Below: On Woodvale Camberwell Old Cemetery, thousands of graves already buried over, heritage, woods and nature are being destroyed for burial plots crammed in cheek by jowl.

WAR GRAVES

Southwark also has been burying over CWGC WW1 and WW2 War Graves for years – without alerting or consulting the War Graves Commission, relatives or the public – and is STILL building over them.

There is a WW1 CWGC War Grave on this site which may have a road being built over it. Southwark has refused to tell or show residents or campaigners the plans. So much for their fake Cemetery ‘Stakeholder’ Group, whose unanimous vote against felling its Chair Cllr Ian Wingfield said he would just ignore.

The Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries is campaigning to preserve family and social history as well as the woods and natural heritage of Southwark’s Camberwell Cemeteries.
