The Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries, the Save Southwark Woods campaign, has asked people to write to Southwark Council to stop tree felling immediately – it’s bird nesting season.
Southwark Council is refusing to stop cutting down up to 60 trees in The Glade, Camberwell New Cemetery woodlands on One Tree Hill, over the fence from One Tree Hill Nature Reserve.
Suggested text is below – everyone is welcome to write their own own but please send as soon as possible, and copy in the politicians and organisations listed.
Dear Cllr Wingfield,
Stop tree felling in Camberwell New Cemetery woodlands immediately – it’s bird nesting season!
I request you stop cutting down trees in Camberwell New Cemetery immediately – it is bird nesting season.
Last Friday you gave the go-ahead to start clearing undergrowth and felling up to 60 trees for burial plots in The Glade, in the part of Camberwell New Cemetery woodlands on One Tree Hill.
Fencing has been erected to start felling larger trees.
Nesting season is from 1st March to 30th August and your own planning consent stated you would not to cut down trees in this period.
Camberwell New Cemetery woodlands are on One Tree Hill just over the fence from One Tree Hill Nature Reserve. I request you stop the felling immediately, at least until the end of the nesting season.
I am copying in RSPB London, the London Wildlife Trust, the Woodland Trust, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Southwark Council Leader Peter John, the three Ward Councillors, MP for the Camberwell Cemeteries Harriet Harman, the Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries and the Camberwell Cemeteries Working Group.
Please confirm receipt of my email.
Sincerely,
