Today, Save Southwark Woods campaigners, Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries, have asked local residents urgently to object to development on land next to Honor Oak Station in the Honor Oak Nature Corridor.
Network Rail are proposing building housing on land in the Honor Oak Nature Corridor adjacent to Camberwell New Cemetery.
HopCroft Forum, a local community group, are drafting a Neighbourhood Development Plan. They currently support residential development on this land – but have asked residents to email them as they have said they are open to changing their minds on this.
The site is right on the Lewisham/Southwark boundary. Honor Oak Park is in Lewisham but adjacent to Camberwell New Cemetery in Southwark. But nature doesn’t recognise borders.
The Honor Oak Nature Corridor straddles the border and is a valuable resource to the area. It includes Devonshire Road and Garthorne Road Nature Reserves, Camberwell New Cemetery, One Tree Hill Nature Reserve, One Tree Hill Allotments and the Honor Oak Rec Ground.
“Hedgehogs, owls, bats, reptiles, butterflies, bees and all kinds of other rare and common species all use this part of the Honor Oak Nature Corridor,” says Blanche Cameron, Chair of the Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries.
“We are committed to preserving all the green spaces in and around the cemeteries. It’s great that the HopCroft Forum are open to changing their minds on making it development land. But people need to email ASAP to let them know they want it saved. The last deadline is midnight on Tuesday 31st January.”

The Save Southwark Woods Campaign is fighting to save the Camberwell Cemeteries as memorial park nature reserves, as well as all the natural green spaces of Honor Oak Park, Nunhead, Dulwich, Brockley and Forest Hill.
