It is illegal to bury people in waterlogged graves. This is because ground and surface water contamination from graveyards can be some of the most toxic drainage out there, as it can be a public health risk ofr containing dangerous bacteria like Ecoli.
Save Southwark Woods has repeatedly brought to the attention of Southwark Council the severe waterlogging of graves at both of the Camberwell Cemeteries - even new ones.
This serious issue and incredible disrespect for the graves of loved ones buried in the Cemeteries has been treated by the Council with contemptuous disdain.
In the Southwark News in September 2015, the Council responded to an article on waterlogged graves by claiming (again) that residents were lying, that photos provided were from February and not the recent autumn rains, and thee was no problem as the Council had dealt with the issue.
This was obviously a blatant lie.
Photos had dates for both February and September 2015 and the waterlogging of old and new graves has continued into 2016.
Photos here show waterlogging of both old and new graves over the last year.
If you have family buried in either of the Camberwell cemeteries, do get in touch, as the Council now also propose excavation thousands of graves to sell off as new burial plots.
