This is an emergency.
The chainsaws are on their way. The first 2 acres of woods and trees are about to be cut down unlawfully without required Church of England permission.
More than 100 people turned out to show our love and care for these beautiful historic woods and graves - including independent Mayoral candidate Rosalind Readhead, Cllr David Dean, environmental campaigner Donnachadh McCarthy, Steve Cornish Chair of Russia Dock Woodland and wonderful local band Les Zoings along with local families.
The Diocese has received over 800 public objections to Southwark's plans to mound over Commonwealth War Graves, 48,000 public graves, build an access road over private graves and raze two acres of nature conservation area woodland. As a result a court hearing is to be held into Southwark's proposals some time in late Spring.
But Southwark Council caims falsely it has ocnsent from the Church already and is forging ahead without legal permission.
Save Southwark Woods has written to the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to beg him urgently to intervene.
