On July 8th, SSW delivered the first 8.500 signatures to Southwark Council to save beautiful Southwark Woods from the chainsaws and the diggers - with respect for the dead and woods for the living.
Save Southwark Woods campaigners presented the petition and made the case to Southwark Council Assembly to:
• Declare Southwark Woods a 100 acre Memorial Park Nature Reserve with respect for the dead and woodland for the living
• Invest in cheaper, fairer burial provision for all faiths at Kemnal Park Cemetery
The Liberal Democrat group, 13 of the 61 councillors, also proposed a motion to call the whole burial strategy in to the Scrutiny Committee for review and for a public consultation worthy of the name.
Southwark Labour councillors voted in a block against both the petition and the motion. These destructive, uncosted and unfair proposals go to Cabinet for ratification, followed by planning permission to themselves - and the church - soon after.
Southwark council ignored the voices of 3,500 of their own residents, who have been denied proper consultation.
Southwark Council has now started the destruction of the first woods and graves at Area Z in the Old Cemetery.
